Hill Middle School Announces New Honors Program; Open House Wednesday, Oct. 16

Hill Middle School is offering a new Honors Program next school year and will feature this new program during an open house Wednesday, Oct. 16 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“The Honors Program is designed for motivated students who are willing to work hard and do their very best at everything they undertake,” said Hill principal Don Roy. “One of the district’s three overarching goals is to set high expectations for students and this program is geared precisely to challenge students academically and raise the bar.”

Students who enroll will be expected to complete the high school algebra requirement by the end of eighth grade, and will move together through an accelerated curriculum in language arts, science, social studies, foreign language, and computers as well.

To be admitted to the program, students must submit a completed application that shows they are achieving above grade level in reading and math. They must also have a teacher recommendation and parent approval. To remain in the Honors Program, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and participate positively in all classes and other school functions. Honors students will be expected to achieve consistent growth on standardized tests.

“Students who perform well in this program and pass the appropriate placement tests will be eligible for accelerated and Advanced Placement classes at East High School, and the Scholars program or the International Baccalaureate program at George Washington High School,” said principal Roy. Hill sends students to both East and GW.

The new program grew out of conversations with parents in the communities served by Hill, Roy said, and a desire on the part of the school faculty to provide challenging academics.

Hill Middle School is located at 451 Clermont St.

Roy is inviting students and parents to learn more about the new program during the Oct. 16 Open House, which should run until about 8:00 p.m. Parents may also call principal Don Roy for more information, 303-399-0254.
