Broad Coalition Promotes International Walk To School Day

When: Wednesday, October 2nd
8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

Where: Bromwell Elementary, Grant Ranch School, Lowry Elementary, Park Hill Elementary, Sabin Elementary, Steck Elementary, and Slavens School.

What: With only one quarter of all American children walking or biking to school, experts believe this may be a significant factor in the alarming rise in childhood obesity. Creating safe routes to school and increasing community participation will aid in increasing physical activity in children. In addition, more children walking to school will decrease traffic congestion and improve air quality in and around neighborhood schools. This event will also help elementary school-aged children and their parents learn safe ways to walk to school in an attempt to prevent pedestrian injuries and death in Denver.

Who: A diverse group of organizations is launching a unified effort to promote International Walk to School Day in seven Denver area schools. A broad based coalition including Transportation Solutions, the City and County of Denver, Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) Ride Arrangers, Feet First, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, The Children’s Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, the Denver Police Department and Denver Public Schools are behind this proposal to urge children and their parents to walk to school.
