On Sept. 11 all Denver Public schools will schedule a moment of silence as a school-wide event during the course of the school day. Gov. Bill Owens has asked county and local governments and school districts to hold flag-lowering ceremonies on Sept. 11, either at the time of the first terrorist attacks or at another time during the day.
The following schools have announced special activities:
- Kaiser Elementary School: “Remember the Heroes Day” program will be presented at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at the school. Students will say the Pledge of Allegiance and observe a moment of silence. The student body will sing a number of patriotic songs and Principal Angela Wilhite will speak. Classes will present firefighters with gifts of appreciation.
- Sabin Elementary School: The Sabin choir will perform from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Fort Logan cemetery. The students are currently making quilts to remember the event.
- Cory Elementary School: At noon, the students will meet on the front lawn for a short memorial, including music by the band and chorus. Students will present their Mosaic of Hands project, symbolizing peace. After eating lunch outside, students will be given a red, white and blue ribbon to tie on the fence in honor of those who lost their lives.
- Wyman Elementary: Third graders have written stories about the positive things that have happened since Sept. 11, and the stories are displayed on a bulletin board in the main hall along with an American flag created by the school counselor.
- Remington Elementary: Students presented flags and mementos to Donna Miller, who is representing Colorado in Flight Across America. The students are tracking Miller's flight and corresponding with her throughout her journey.
- Castro Elementary: On Sept. 12, the school will display a 24' x 8' wall with the names of those who died in the Sept. 11 attacks.
- East High School: Students will gather outside the school at 7:30 a.m. The choir will sing, and teacher Mark Thalhofer will talk about the importance of the day. Two East High graduates died on planes that crashed into the World Trade Center. The ROTC will march into the school with a flag that once flew over the Capitol in Washington, D.C. It will be placed permanently at the entrance of the second floor south wing along with a plaque.
- JFK High School: ROTC will present the flag and lead the pledge at about 8:55 a.m.
- Millennium Quest High School, Manual: A week of events is planned: Monday: Wall of Thoughts – Students will write their thoughts about peace and nonviolence.
