Board of Education Meetings Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 4 and 5; Resolution On Proposed English Language Amendment Will Be Considered

The Board of Education has several meetings over the next two days, beginning with a special Regular Meeting this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to discuss the English Language Immersion Amendment proposed on the November ballot.

The Board has invited a representative of the proponents of the amendment, English for the Children, and the opponents, English Plus, to address specific questions about the amendment for the Board.

Beginning at 4:30 p.m. today, the Board of Education will hold a public hearing on the English Language Immersion Amendment. So far, 46 speakers have signed up.

The Board will discuss the proposed amendment and possibly take action at its regular meeting tomorrow, Sept. 5.

Tomorrow's meetings begin with a 4:00 p.m. work session, including the following agenda items:

  • Review of Board Meeting agenda items
  • Superintendent's updates/goals and strategies for 2002-2003
  • English Language Immersion Ballot Initiative
  • Appointment of CDM Commission
  • Legal (closed)

This meeting will be held in Room 706.

The Regular Meeting in the first floor Board Room will begin at 5:00 p.m. Among the agenda items:

  • Resolution - Revising Denver School of Science and Technology Charter School Application
  • Charter School Guidelines for 2002-2003 school year
  • Grant Proposal - Preschool and School Aged Students with Disabilities, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Colorado Department of Education
  • Consideration, Discussion, and Possible Action on English Language Immersion Ballot Initiative
  • CDM waiver request - Bromwell Elementary School

At 7:00 p.m., the Board will hold its monthly public hearing in the first floor Board Room.

To date, there are 17 speakers signed up to discuss a variety of topics including the "Expect Success Project," "Transportation Issues," and "Historic Auditorium Renovation," among other topics.
