Historic Lincoln Elementary Included In 2002 West Washington Park House Tour

The 2002 West Washington Park House Tour will feature the historic Lincoln Elementary School as one of its many stops. As part of the event, school organizers will be auctioning off a collection of quilts created by current students. The tour will occur on Saturday, September 7, 2002 from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

"Working with the West Washington Park Neighborhood Association has been a pleasure," said Daphne Hunter, Lincoln Elementary School Principal. "They provide a communication link between the school and community. This relationship is truly an example of how the school and community can work together for the benefit of each."

Visitors stopping by Lincoln Elementary will be provided refreshments and the opportunity to take part in a silent auction, which will include six quilts that contain squares designed by Lincoln students. The squares are crayon drawings that depict the children's interpretation of various Washington Park Homes. Proceeds from the auction will be used to support the Tier III (SCFD) Arts Programs, various Student Council Projects, and the Shakespeare Festival.

Lincoln Elementary, located at 710 S. Pennsylvania Street, is nestled in West Washington Park and has been a prominent part of South Denver since 1891. Now declared a Denver historic landmark, the one hundred-eleven year old school features a multi-age classroom concept that improves the student-teacher bond and further contributes to the school's reputation of being a unique center of learning for students.

In addition to the Lincoln Elementary stop, the 2002 tour will feature the neighborhood's celebrated Victorian, bungalow, and Denver Square homes. The tour will also highlight the art collections of some of the area homeowners, and will provide participants with a look inside the Grant Avenue Community Center (formerly the Grant Avenue Methodist Church). Other stops along the tour include:

  • 1167 S. Ogden St.
  • 907 S. Corona
  • 301 Lincoln St.
  • 520 E. Dakota Ave.
  • 1005 E. Dakota Ave.

Tour participants may start at any point and visit as many or as few sites as they like. Tickets are $10 and available in advance at Utopian European Floral located at 1113 South Pearl Street, or the Washington Park Community Center located at 809 South Washington Street. Tickets will also be available the day of the tour at each address.
