Working to increase parent involvement and participation, McGlone Elementary School teachers will visit incoming first-graders in their homes on Tuesday, July 23. McGlone operates on the district's Continuous Year Calendar and opens for the 2002-2003 school year on Wednesday, July 24.
"Our entire staff is involved in this, in reaching out to the community and inviting parents to come to the school," said McGlone principal Barbara Cooper. There are 90 incoming first-graders but each first-grader's family will receive a visit from at least three McGlone teachers from all grade levels.
"We put together a welcoming packet for each first-grade student a book, pencils, a notebook and more to reach out to the parents and show them we want them to be involved in their child's education," she added.
Cooper said teachers also plan to discuss Success For All with parents. Success For All, used at McGlone for the first time last year, is a comprehensive restructuring program for elementary schools, that emphasizes prevention, early and intensive intervention, and tutoring for students with academic difficulties.
Teachers visited first-grade families today (Monday, July 22) and will do so again Tuesday between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
McGlone is one of 18 elementary schools across DPS that will open Wednesday on the Continuous Year Calendar.
