Colorado History Day Is Saturday, April 27; DPS Will Be Represented By Sixty-Two Teams

Colorado History Day will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Saturday, April 27. Students in grades six through 12 from throughout the state will participate.

Sixty-two team and individual entries from Denver Public Schools will compete. The teams were selected as state qualifiers during the March 9 Denver History Day at Hamilton Middle School.

For the competition, students research a topic of their choice based on the theme and prepare entries that may be in the form of historical papers, documentaries (media presentation), live performances, or exhibits. The theme for the 2002 competition is "Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History."

Specific competition venues are:

Exhibits (Junior Individual, Junior Group, Senior Individual, Senior Group), Ballroom of the University Memorial Center. Set-up will begin at 8:00 a.m., closed judging will begin at 9:00 a.m. The exhibit area will be open for public viewing before 9:00 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Media (Junior Individual, Junior Group, Senior Individual, Senior Group), Humanities and Hellems. Preliminary judging will begin at 9:00 a.m. Run-offs will be posted at 12:00 noon and will begin at 12:30 p.m. The media presentations are open to the public.

Performance (Junior Individual, Junior Group, Senior Individual, Senior Group), Hellems, Education, and Humanities. Preliminary judging will begin at 9:00 a.m. Run-offs will be posted at 12:00 noon and will begin at 12:30 p.m. The performances are open to the public.

Papers (Junior, Senior). Closed interviews are held for interviews in the Paper category. There is no public viewing of Papers.

The Awards Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Muenzinger Auditorium (room E050).

Colorado will send the first and second place entries from each of the categories and age divisions to the National History Day Competition, to be held June 8 - 13, at the University of Maryland in College Park.
