Dinner for Four, a boy's quartet from George Washington High School, won the first place award at the 4th Annual Barbershop Quartet competition held on April 20, 2002 at Westminster High School. Members of the quartet include: tenor, Anthony Ramos; lead, Matt Mogg; baritone, Jimmy Laff; and bass, Ryan Howard. The boys received a plaque, medals, a traveling trophy and a cash prize for their vocal music department.
Fame and 4-Tune, a girl's quartet from GW, won the second place award in the girl's division of the contest. Members of the quartet include: tenor, Cari Gabrielse; lead, Anna Brozna; baritone, Laura Barrett; and bass, Emma Vangenderen. The girls also brought home medals and a cash prize for their vocal music department.
Priscilla Shaw is the vocal music instructor at GW, where barbershop was recently introduced to the vocalists within the school. An area men's chorus, the Denver Mountainaires has been instrumental in helping to promote barbershop singing at GW. Shaw has coached the boy's quartet while Melody Horgan, vocal music teacher at Merrill and a member of the Skyline Chorus and the Sweet Adelines, has coached the girl's quartet. The Denver Mountainaires and the Sweet Adelines sponsored the quartet competition.
