Smith Elementary School, which was closed for the day today (Thursday, April 18) due to a flood in the boiler room, will also be closed tomorrow (Friday, April 19) while crews make repairs.
A contractor was working on a new playground for the school when a water line was accidentally severed. Water flooded the school's boiler room.
Standing water was pumped out of the school this morning, but the building is not expected to have hot water or heat tomorrow.
"There is no physical damage to the building, just to the mechanical equipment and the electrical controls," said Rusty Deane, Director of Maintenance and Operations for Denver Public Schools.
Deane placed "preliminary" damage estimates at $50,000 to $60,000. Deane expects the school to reopen for classes on Monday, April 22.
Smith Elementary School is located at 3590 Jasmine Street.
