On Monday, March 18, at 4:00 p.m., the Swansea dancers, part of the Colorado Dance Renaissance Program, will perform at Swansea Elementary School (4650 Columbine St.) for parents and the community.
"We want the community to see the joy this program has brought to the children and families of Swansea and also to thank our supporters," said Esther Smith, dance instructor. "I feel strongly that without my DPS teaching experience, I would not have had enough understanding of the difficulties these children face to transmit this program to them. I love these children and their progress is my joy."
Swansea is a showcase for Colorado Ballet's Dance Renaissance Program because of the quality and achievements of the dancers. The program is also a first in collaborations between Denver Public Schools and the Colorado Ballet--it demonstrates what making bridges between ballet and education can do for the city's children.
This is the first year of the after-school program. The Colorado Ballet has funded a pianist, four ballet classes, and two pre-ballet classes per week in the Swansea gym. Smith often volunteers her time outside of the program to take the children and community to performances as the opportunities arise.
Both classes maintain the atmosphere found in the ballet studiošteacher and students show a quiet enthusiasm motivated by the beauty of their movements.
