2002 Brain Bowl Invitational Tournament Will Test Students Saturday, February 23
Student teams from throughout the state of Colorado will compete Saturday, February 23 at the 2002 Brain Bowl Invitational Tournament at Merrill Middle School.
Middle school students will be peppered with questions from all areas of knowledge - math, science, geography, history, literature, current events, English, music, arts, and more.
Nine Denver middle schools will be represented - Gove, Grant, Hamilton, Hill, Kunsmiller, Merrill, Moore, Morey, and Place. In all, there will be 20 sixth-grade teams, 19 seventh-grade teams, and 24 eighth-grade teams - some from as far away as Grand Lake.
The event is hosted by the University of Denver and area Optimist Clubs.
The competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a Written Round in which teams work together and submit one set of answers per team - no observers (or media) are allowed. There will be 60 multiple choice questions during this session.
Observers (and media) are welcome during four rounds beginning at 9:00 a.m. with teams squaring off head-to-head. Questions during this round are read out loud and the first team to buzz in has the opportunity to answer. Each round contains 30 questions. Points for correct answers accumulate for each round.
Then, beginning at 11:45 a.m., the eight highest scoring teams from each grade level in the morning competition are involved in a single-elimination round.
Round two (final four teams at each grade level) begins at 12:15 p.m.
Finally, the top two teams from each grade level will compete with sixth-grade teams facing off at 1:00 p.m., seventh-grade teams at 1:30 p.m., and eighth-grade teams at 2:00 p.m.
An awards ceremony will begin immediately following the last competition.
Merrill Middle School is located at 1551 S. Monroe Street. Please call Public Information Office for more information, 720-423-3414.
