"World Of Choice" Bus Tour Hits The Road To Help Parents Explore Options And The DPS Choice Process

Uniformed, structured, and fundamental. The Montessori Method. Dual Language. Focused on technology. Emphasizing the arts. These are just a few of the descriptions of educational opportunities parents have to choose from in Denver Public Schools. To find out more, jump on the bus!

Beginning Saturday January 12 and over the next three weekends, Denver Public Schools is sponsoring a bus tour to various locations around the city to provide parents information on DPS and the district's "Choice" process. (See schedule below.)

Parents should look for the yellow mini-bus with a banner that reads "There's a World of Choice in Denver Public Schools." On the bus, parents can pick up brochures for various schools and programs, copies of DPS Today 2002 (the district's Resource and Enrollment Guide), and district maps. Volunteers also will be giving away balloons and goodies to children and various school principals, area superintendents, and other district staff will be available to answer questions about the "Choice" process and how it works.

The "Choice" process allows parents and students the option of applying for a transfer to another neighborhood school. Parents wanting the best chance to secure a seat in a school outside their neighborhood school boundary should have completed enrollment forms for the 2002-2003 school year returned by February 15. Choice forms will be available at all schools starting Monday, January 14. A lottery will be conducted if there are more applicants than space available in any school.

The "Choice" process differs slightly from the many magnet programs throughout the district. Magnet programs conduct their own admission and application process and, while some magnet applications deadlines match the February 15 deadline for the "Choice" process, some magnet program deadlines have already passed for the 2002-2003 school year. However, it's never too late to learn about all district options for 2003-2004 and beyond.

The bus being used for the tour has been donated by the Jared Polis Foundation.
