Community Meetings Announced To Discuss Boundary Changes

A host of boundary changes are being proposed that will affect how students are assigned to schools beginning with the 2002-2003 school year.

The boundary changes are needed to create attendance areas for new schools - Gateway Elementary School, Parkfield Middle School, North Central Middle School, and Lowry Elementary School - and to adjust enrollments for other schools nearby.

A proposal to increase enrollment at Grant Middle School and reduce enrollment at Kunsmiller Middle School will also be discussed.

The meetings are scheduled as follows:

  1. Monday, December 10, Greenwood Elementary School, 5130 Durham Court. Time: 6:30 p.m.
  2. Tuesday, December 11, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, 19535 E. 46th Ave. Time: 6:30 p.m.
  3. Wednesday, December 12, Cole Middle School, 3240 Humboldt St. Time: 6:00 p.m.
  4. Monday, December 17, Grant Middle School, 1751 S. Washington St. Time: 6:30 p.m.
  5. Tuesday, December 18, Whiteman Elementary School, 451 Newport St. Time: 6:30 p.m.

Following is additional detail about each of the proposals:

  1. Gateway Elementary School (16000 Maxwell Place in Montbello) - Attendance area would be bounded by Chambers Boulevard on the west, 56th Avenue to the north, Pena Boulevard on the east, and 40th Avenue on the south. The boundary area for Greenwood Elementary School would remain the same except that the eastern border would be defined by Chambers Boulevard. For Oakland Elementary School, the boundary would remain the same except that the eastern border would be defined by Chambers Boulevard.

  2. Parkfield Middle School (5290 Kittredge Street in Montbello) - The attendance area would be defined by the elementary school boundaries for Ford, Greenwood, Maxwell, and the new Gateway.
Martin Luther King Middle Jr. Middle School boundaries would be affected by this proposed change. That school's boundary would be defined by the elementary school boundaries for Amesse, McGlone, Oakland, Marrama, and Green Valley schools.

  3. North Central Middle School (3955 Steele Street) The attendance would be defined by the elementary school boundaries for Garden Place and Swansea elementary schools. In addition, the area starting at York St and 44th Ave., east on 44th Ave. to Colorado Blvd, south on Colorado Blvd. to 37th Ave., west on 37th Ave. to Garfield St., south on Garfield St. to Bruce Randolph Ave., west on Bruce Randolph Ave. to Milwaukee St., north on Milwaukee St. to 36th Ave., north on York to 44th Ave.

Other schools affected by the creation of the North Central Middle School boundary include:

    • Gove Middle School - The area west of York St., north of 24th Ave to 28th Ave would be assigned to Cole Middle School.
    • Baker Middle School - The area in downtown Denver currently assigned to Morey Middle School that is south of 19th Street, west of Broadway, and north of Colfax Avenue would be assigned to Baker.
    • Morey Middle School - The area of downtown Denver northwest of Welton St. and the area defined by Whittier Elementary would be assigned to Cole Middle School.
    • Cole Middle School - Cole's attendance area would be defined as follows: Start at 19th Street and Broadway northwest to I-25, I-25 north to Fox St., Fox St. south to Ringsby following Ringsby northeast to I-70, I-70 east to Brighton Boulevard, southwest on Brighton Boulevard to 44th Avenue, heading east on 44th Avenue to York Street, south on York Street to 24th Avenue, heading west on 24th to Williams Street, going south on Williams Street to 23rd Avenue, heading west on 23rd Avenue to Washington Street, turning north on Washington Street to 26th Street, going northwest on 26th Street to Welton Street, heading southwest on Welton St. to Broadway.

  4. Grant Middle School (1751 S. Washington Street) - The Grant Middle School attendance area would be defined by the current area and the elementary area of Schmitt Elementary School and that portion of Godsman Elementary School (east of Shoshone Street). Other schools affected by this proposal include Kunsmiller Middle School. Kunsmiller's attendance area would be reduced by assigning the elementary areas of Schmitt Elementary School and Godsman (east of Shoshone Street) to Grant Middle School.

  5. Lowry Elementary School (8001 E. Cedar Avenue) - The attendance area would be bounded by Quebec Street on the west, 11th Avenue on the north, Denver City Limits on the east, and Alameda Avenue on the south. The attendance area would also include the portion west of Monaco Parkway between Alameda Ave. and 1st Ave. This boundary area would affect Whiteman Elementary School by removing the area defined by Lowry Elementary School described above. The area defined by Willow Street to the west, Colfax Avenue to the north, Denver City Limits on the east, and 11th Avenue to the south would remain assigned to Whiteman.

Finally, a proposal will go the Board of Education for the Stapleton Redevelopment Area. New homes in the Stapleton Redevelopment that are occupied during the 2002-2003 school year will be assigned to the following schools - Philips Elementary School, Smiley Middle School, and George Washington High School.
