Swansea Elementary School holds the
distinction of having the first playground and "learning landscape"
in Denver Public Schools that also includes an outdoor amphitheater.
Together with the sodded playground, the outdoor spaces at the school
have been vastly improved.
The dedication for the new facilities is scheduled for Thursday,
November 15, at 9:30 a.m. Swansea Elementary School is located at
4650 Columbine Street.
The new play area will include a stainless steel beam "timeline"
embedded in the asphalt that helps children understand the concept
of time and space, new playground equipment with ADA accessibility,
and hard surface areas for games like foursquare and tether ball.
"Squiggly Hopscotch" is also included for children with
or without physical challenges.
The playground is a "learning landscape" or interactive
learning playground made possible through a partnership with the
University of Colorado at Denver. Other sponsors of the playground
include the Mayor's Office (Neighborhood and Housing Development
Services), the Gates Family Foundation, Donnell-Kay Foundation,
Denver Public Schools, Swansea Elementary School, the Swansea neighborhood
community, the Buell Foundation, and the Daniels Foundation.
