Mexican Consulate Donates Books To Aid In English Language Acquisition At Denver Public Schools

Denver's Mexican Consulate and the Government of Mexico have donated a gift of 30,000 new Spanish language elementary school textbooks. "This gift will serve to enhance our instruction and can supplement existing materials in use for English language learners," said Executive Director Jose Perea, Department of English Language Acquisition.

Each DPS elementary school with an ELA program will receive materials. On October 3rd, Munroe Elementary School (3440 W. Virginia Ave.) received its shipment of 18 boxes. Superintendent Jerry Wartgow, Mexican Consul Leticia Calzada Lopez, and children at Munroe were there to receive the books and talk about their partnership.

"We are grateful that the Mexican Consul and the Mexican government have taken such an interest in helping Denver Public Schools and its students," said DPS Superintendent Jerry Wartgow. "This donation is just one example of how we can work together to improve the lives of all children through education."

Denver Public Schools has more than 14,000 Spanish-speaking students. The books are appropriate for grades one through six. They include textbooks, atlases, and enrichment materials with such titles as Los Libros de Mama y Papa (Books for Mothers and Fathers) and La Nutricion de la Familia (Nutrition for the Family).
