On Tuesday, October 2 students and parents from Bromwell
Elementary School will join hundreds of mayors, city council members,
superintendents and other community leaders from across the country
for a walk to school in celebration of International Walk to School
Day.
The event will happen between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. in the Cherry Creek
neighborhood around Bromwell Elementary School, 2500 E. 4th Ave.
Councilman Ed Thomas will participate and Denver Police Department
officers will serve as crossing guards in the nearby streets.
The Partnership for a Walkable America established Walk to School
Day in an effort to promote physical activity, pedestrian safety
and to become aware of the difficulties children face on their trip
each day.
The first event was launched in 1997 when Mayor Daley led local
officials and school children on a walk to school in Chicago. Since
then, the event has grown considerably. In the year 2000 there were
over two million walkers from 9 countries across the globe.
This year walkers from more than 18 countries are expected to participate
including the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Cyprus,
Sweden, Brazil, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain, India, France, Denmark,
Italy, Chile, Mexico, Germany and Argentina.
Bromwell Elementary School plans to join the world-wide walking
celebration. Community leaders will be walking to school with the
students and parents.
