West High School Students Chosen For The Only Two Horatio Alger Scholarships In The State

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans honored two seniors from West High School with national scholarships. Joseph Ford and Mario Galvan received a $10,000 scholarship from the Horatio Alger National Scholars Program and will attend the National Scholars Conference in Washington D.C. April 3-7, 2002.

Huong "Kim" Na, also a student at West High School, received $1,000 as a National Scholar Finalist.

"We are so proud that West High seniors are in this selective group who have demonstrated integrity, hard work, determination and perseverance," said Diane W. Lloyd, West High School Counselor. "Another 200 students in the nation received the $1,000 award including Kim Na, who has shown the same high goals and fierce desire to succeed. DPS can well be proud to have produced such a high percentage of nationwide award winners!"

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is a program that honors the achievements of dedicated individuals who have succeeded in the face of adversity. This association awards more than $3 million in scholarships annually. Only 105 seniors across the country are recognized nationally to receive the $10,000 awards.
