Erik Weihenmayer, First Blind Man To Climb Mt. Everest, Will Share His Story At Henry Middle School Tuesday, September 25

Erik Weihenmayer is scheduled to repay a favor.

During Erik's news-making ascent of Mt. Everest earlier this year - he was the first blind man to climb the world's tallest peak - neighbor Connie Gleason took care of Erik's dog.

On Tuesday, Erik will say thanks for that favor by talking about his adventure with students at the school where Connie works as a math teacher - Henry Middle School (3005 S. Golden Way) in southwest Denver. Erik will speak about overcoming his handicap and achieving his dreams.

The assembly with Erik and the Henry students will begin at 8:40 a.m. Following his talk with students, Erik will also visit classes at Henry for the remainder of the morning.

Erik is a world class athlete: acrobatic skydiver, long distance biker, marathon runner, skier, mountaineer, ice climber, and rock climber. He is also a prolific speaker and author of "Touch the Top of the World: A Blind Man's Journey to Climb Farther than the Eye Can See."

Erik was born with a rare genetic disease, retinoschisis, which left him blind when he was 13. But instead of giving up his love of sports, he began wrestling and became one of his high school team's star players.
