SAT Scores Increase For Denver Public Schools

The 2000-2001 Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) results for Denver Public Schools show a significant increase from 1008 to 1047.

The results remain below the Colorado average of 1081, but the growth in the district's scores outpaced the growth in the state's results. The state composite score climbed from 1071 to 1081.

The national composite score is 1020, up 1 point from the previous year.

"We're encouraged by the results," said Superintendent Jerry Wartgow. "We also look at these numbers to make sure that students are considering college as an option. We will have to look at the overall numbers of students taking this test, combined with those taking the ACT, to see if students are being encouraged to think about higher education."

A breakdown of the scores showed an increase from 509 to 529 on the verbal portion and an increase from 499 to 518 on the math portion.

Although fewer students are taking the test, other college entrance exams like the ACT are becoming more accessible to all students.
