Superintendent Jerry Wartgow
To Tour Schools Monday, August 20
Superintendent Jerry Wartgow will visit
four schools Monday, August 20 as the 2001-2002 school year opens.
Three new schools will welcome students for the first time - Greenwood Elementary
School in far northeast (5130 Durham Court), Grant Ranch School in southwest
Denver (5400 S. Jay Circle), Academia Ana Marie Sandoval in northwest Denver
(3655 Wyandot St.). Academia Sandoval will offer the unique Dual Language
- Montessori program to three-, four-, and five-year-olds.
The Grant Ranch and Greenwood schools feature a state-of-the-art amplification
system for teachers in many classrooms. With the system, teachers wear a
wireless headset microphone and his or her voice is then amplified through
four speakers. The volume of each speaker is adjusted to equalize acoustics
throughout the classroom. The audio system allows teachers to project easily
to all corners of a classroom and has demonstrated success in boosting achievement.
Other changes include an expanded and renewed Computer Magnet program at
Thomas Jefferson and North high schools and three, smaller schools-within-a-school
at Manual High.
An additional 900 students are expected to enroll in the new school year,
bringing the district's surging enrollment to 72,000.
Most students attend schools that operate on the traditional school-year
calendar that begins Monday. Students in 13 elementary schools have been
hard at work for weeks; they started on the Continuous Year Calendar July
30.
