Apple Computer And Denver
Public Schools Will Offer "Digital Video Camp" To 16 Select
Middle School Students
August 1, 2001
A select group of middle school students will participate later this
month in a free, weeklong Digital Video Camp being sponsored by Apple
Computer and Denver Public Schools Department of Educational Technology.
The camp will include 16 students throughout the district who have been
nominated by their teachers to participate. During the camp, which starts
Monday, August 6, students will divide into four teams and work on a variety
of digital video projects. Each day the students will learn a new technology
skill to be applied towards producing a final video. On Friday afternoon
(August 10), parents will be invited to view the students' work.
Chris Graves and Tim Meehan will teach the classes. Chris is a former
film production instructor at the University of Colorado in Boulder and
a student Oscar winner in 1993. Tim Meehan is an Apple Solution Expert
in Denver, a consultant on video and graphics production, and author of
PhotoShop reference books. Mike Untermayer, technology teacher at Hill
Middle School, will be assisting with the classes.
The class will be held at the Rocky Mountain Digital Arts Center. The
Rocky Mountain Digital Arts Center is a state-of-the-art technology learning
center located in downtown Denver at (13th Avenue and Delaware Street).
The center hosts workshops and seminars for Macromedia, Adobe, Apple and
others. The students will be using state-of-the-art Power Macintosh G4
computers with 17-inch displays - one per student.
An instructional training video will be produced during the class to show
the steps involved in producing a digital video using Apple's iMovie software.
The iMovie software is common in DPS computer labs and classrooms, so
the training video will be used for student and teacher training during
the upcoming school year. It is also anticipated that the students from
this summer's Digital Video Camp will return to their schools and help
train teachers and peers on creating digital videos.
"The Digital Video Camp promises to be a great learning experience
for its participants and is a fine partnership example where a technology
corporation, a local training facility and a school district are combining
their resources to benefit the youth and schools of Denver," said
Kipp Bentley, Manager of Educational Technology in DPS.
