Former Head Start Student Receives Scholarship For "Giving Back"

Denver Public Schools student Joshua McCoy will be recognized for "giving back" to the program that helped him get a "head start." McCoy will receive the Marion Gottesfeld Scholar of the Year Award for outstanding community service for 2000-2001 from the Ambassadors for Literacy program. The award also includes $6,000.

The Ambassadors for Literacy program raises scholarship money for outstanding young scholars who are the products of Head Start programs. It was formed to promote the image of Head Start as a foundation of literacy for disadvantaged children. These ambassadors are now being trained by graduate students to go out to Head Start centers in the city and teach basic pre-literacy skills to Head Start students.

Dr. Jerry Wartgow will present the award to McCoy on Wednesday, August 1 at 10:00 a.m. in the first floor lobby of the administration building at 900 Grant Street. (The media is encouraged to pre-arrange a visit to a Head Start site where other Ambassadors are working with children.)

The award is named after the recently deceased University of Denver Trustee, Mrs. Marion Gottesfeld. Gottesfeld was one of the most dedicated sponsors of the Ambassadors for Literacy program.

Ambassadors for Literacy is a collaboration between Denver Public Schools and the Head Start program sponsored by Rocky Mountain S.E.R. Please contact Norman Watt at 303-779-4648 for more information.
