Fire Truck Escort To Miniature Golf Will Help Hamilton Students Celebrate Reading 31 Million Words

June 5, 2001

This year, teacher Doug Wilhelm challenged his sixth-grade students to read 31 million words - or an average of 1 million words per child.

This week, the students surpassed the goal (with just four days of school to spare) and Mr. Wilhelm has organized a celebration for their efforts.

On Thursday, June 7, students will form a bicycle caravan and ride on the bike path from Hamilton Middle School to Hamden Heights Pool (at Dayton Street and Girard Ave.) From there, the Denver Fire Department will escort the group east on Girard to Kennedy Golf Course for a round of miniature golf - an activity the students selected.

Photo opportunities:

Fire truck escort 10:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.; also students and firemen playing golf at Kennedy Golf Course (10500 E. Hampden Ave.), beginning at 10:45 a.m.

Special thanks to supporters - Hamilton Middle School principal Reina Guitierrez, Jeff Buckingham at Kennedy Golf Course, Dolly Wilcoxson at PermaBound Books (cake donation), and Firehouse 13 of the Denver Fire Department.

For more information, please contact teacher Doug Wilhelm at Hamilton, 303-755-1267.
