DSA Visual Arts Students Exhibit Works At Denver International Airport; Display Debuts Saturday, June 9

June 5, 2001

Art takes flight at Denver International Airport (DIA) this summer as the Denver School of the Arts (DSA) visual arts students exhibit their artwork on the mezzanine level of Concourse A. The official launch will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 9, with a public reception on the Northeast corner of the concourse.

Artwork, ranging from pastels to award-winning photography, will be displayed on a special 78-foot exhibit wall from June 9 through Sept. 4. A Denver School of the Arts banner will be draped at the top of the wall, and individual artwork will be identified by title and the name and age of the student artist. Many of the pieces will be for sale.

"We are excited about this opportunity to publicly showcase the works of these extremely talented students," said DSA Visual Arts Instructor Darrell Tomlinson. "We appreciate DIA providing us with this outstanding space."

DIA Art Program Manager Mimi Moore said the DSA exhibit represents DIA's commitment to young artists: "It is important to validate children's effort to create by providing a public venue for their work. It lets them know that what they do is important and is being taken seriously. We are delighted to highlight the work of DSA's fine young artists."

Approximately 85 students in grades 6 -12 are enrolled in the visual arts program at DSA, a Denver Public School.

A number of companies have donated products and services to the art exhibit, including Hobby Lobby, 920 S. Monaco Blvd., Denver, which provided the uniform black frames for the artwork; MacDonald's and King Soopers, which will contribute refreshments for the reception; CD Graphics, Sach-Lawlor Signs, Imagery Studios, In Touch Cellular and Paging and Blue Feather Art Services.

The Denver School of the Arts, the only comprehensive arts magnet school in the Rocky Mountain region, provides the opportunity for students in grades 6-12 to grow academically and to develop their artistic talents. Students audition for admittance to the school in the arts major of their choice: creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, stagecraft and design, visual art, vocal music and video/cinematography. Also, the school has a comprehensive academic program that includes a Gifted and Talented program, Internet access, Advanced Placement (AP) classes, and CU Succeeds.
