"Journey Through Our
Heritage" At North High School April 6
April 3, 2001
What is the true meaning of el Cinco de Mayo? What was the impact of
Emiliano Zapata in Mexico? Which Native American tribes lived in present-day
Colorado before the arrival of other populations?
Teams of students from various metro Denver high schools will share their
knowledge of such subjects Friday, April 6 in a Jeopardy-style competition
about the history and culture of indigenous peoples.
The event will begin at the North High School auditorium (2960 N. Speer
Blvd.) at 5:30 p.m. and run for about three hours.
Participating high schools include Manual, East, West, North, Lincoln,
Contemporary Learning Academy and Denver School of the Arts (from Denver
Public Schools) as well as Adams City, Durango, La Academia at Denver
Inner City Parish, and Metro Lab.
This is the second competition sponsored by "Journey Through Our
Heritage," a program designed to bring local high school students
together to engage in an academic competition in the area of Native American,
Chicana/o, and Latina/o studies.
The first competition involved writing an essay; the third will involve
using any artistic medium to develop a presentation around a theme about
indigenous cultures.
The Journey is sponsored by the Hispanic Education Advisory Council of
Denver Public Schools and by the Chicana/o Studies Department of Metropolitan
State College of Denver.
