100 Students to Help Re-build "The City 7"- Seven Denver School Playgrounds in Need of an Upgrade

Nearly 100 volunteers and 100 students will begin improvements on seven playgrounds including the addition of "learning landscapes" or interactive learning playground equipment beginning Saturday, May 5th at 8:30 a.m.

One such playground has already been built at the Garden Place Academy, 4425 Lincoln Street. Principal Albina Lujan-Crouse said, "It's brought back pride into the community, eliminated vandalism, reduced injuries, and built character on the playground. I was shocked that a playground would have such an impact on the school."

Each of the following dates marks the official ground-breaking and start to construction. The first ceremony will include a Mexican dance by third graders in honor of Cinco de Mayo followed by the planting of more than 30 trees by volunteers. Here are the dates:

  • Fairmont Elementary School, 520 W. Third Ave., Saturday, May 5, 8:30 a.m.
  • Swansea Elementary School, 4650 Columbine St., Monday, May 14
  • Dates for Fairmont, Kaiser, Cowell, Greenlee, Smedley, and Whittier elementary schools are yet to be announced.

DPS is receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in aid for the project from private foundations, including the Denver Broncos.
