Retired Employees Give Back:
Ten $2,000 Scholarships To Be Awarded To Top Students
April 23, 2001
Ten top students will be recognized at a luncheon on Saturday, April
28, and awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the Denver Public School Retired
Employees (DPSRE) Scholarship Foundation.
The ten Class of 2001 graduates were selected following a screening based
on grade-point average, class rank, courses taken, scores on college entrance
exams, school activities, employment record, letters of recommendation,
and a student essay. Selected applicants were then interviewed individually.
The Foundation Board of Directors made the final selections.
The luncheon, sponsored by Fox Sports, will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the
Marriott Southeast, located at Interstate 25 and Hampden Ave.
The 10 scholarship recipients, representing seven different high schools
this year, are:
- Quyen Nguyen, Abraham Lincoln
- Justin Segal, East
- Jessica Schimmel, George Washington
- Desiree Horton, John F. Kennedy
- Jeffrey Keiser, John F. Kennedy
- Mary Lee Chhea, Montbello
- Calina Bowman, West
- Jennifer E. Howell, West
- Nam Luu, West
- Nathan Bock, Denver School of the Arts
The $2,000 scholarships are ten times more than the amounts when the
DPSRE scholarship program began in 1996.
"The Foundation takes great pride in the fact that all administrative
and fund-raising costs and clerical duties are performed by district retired
employees, who volunteer their time for these activities," said Don
Giseburt, who is chairman of the Foundation's Board of Directors. "We
have an outstanding group of scholars this year in the Denver Public Schools
who are being recognized for their hard work and high performance as strong
contributors to their schools."
