New Lowry Elementary School
Breaks Ground Thursday, April 19
April 18, 2001
The former Lowry Air Force Base will serve as a backdrop for a ground
breaking ceremony Thursday, April 19, as Denver Public Schools begins
work on a new elementary school for the fast-growing community.
The event will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the project site, 8001 East Cedar
Ave.
Members of the Denver Board of Education including president Elaine Gantz
Berman, other district officials, members of the Lowry Redevelopment Authority
and neighborhood leaders are all expected to mark the start of construction
on the new elementary school, which will serve students in grades ECE
(Early Childhood Education) through fifth grade.
The 500 students anticipated for the school will ultimately find 23 classrooms,
including a music and art room, spread over 67,000 square feet. In addition
to the classrooms, students will benefit from the interactive, educational
playground equipment, a ball field and grass play areas.
Construction should be complete by July, 2002. This project is being built
with proceeds from the $305 million dollar bond, approved by voters in
1998.
