Mayor Webb To Attend Ball
Field Groundbreaking At Cole
April 10, 2001
Denver Public Schools, entering the final phase of a three-year program
to redevelop the ball fields and grounds at 18 middle and two elementary
schools, will host a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, April 12 at Cole
Middle School
.
Mayor Wellington Webb, community leaders, neighborhood leaders, and members
of the Denver Board of Education will attend the event, scheduled to begin
at 9 a.m. Cole Middle School is located at 3240 Humboldt St.
Under the final phase of the "greening" effort this summer,
DPS is preparing to make improvements at six middle schools, including
Cole, Gove, Hill, Martin Luther King, Morey, and Skinner. The groundbreaking
at Cole will serve as the ceremonial start for all six projects.
The construction for these projects is scheduled to begin in May. The
projects should be completed by mid-July.
As part of the city's 1998 Neighborhood Bond, as approved by voters, DPS
has been successful in improving the needs of the schools and their communities
by transforming mostly pea gravel play areas into sodded fields.
Most of the upgrades include installing "skinned" infields,
backstops, dugouts and irrigation systems to care for the new Kentucky
Bluegrass. Due to Morey's limited outdoor space, the project there will
focus on general landscape improvements. At Martin Luther King Jr. Middle
School, the project will yield general improvements to the ballfield.
