Horatio Alger Recipients Will Be Honored Wednesday, March 14

March 13, 2001

Three graduating seniors at Montbello High School will be honored Wednesday, March 14 as part of the Horatio Alger Scholarship Presentations.

Cleo Parker-Robinson and Bertha Lynn will deliver dual keynote speeches during an awards ceremony.

The award luncheon honoring students Danielle Gloster, Thomas Smith and Sanford Sundara begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room at Montbello High School.

The Horatio Alger Association is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles. Specifically, the association seeks to educate young people about the vast opportunities inherent in America's free enterprise system.

The recipients of scholarships are:

  • Danielle Gloster, currently serving as senior class vice-president and treasurer of the National Honor Society. Danielle has maintained a position on the honor roll for the last four years and was a member of the Montbello Girls Varsity Basketball Team.
  • Thomas Smith , currently vice-president of Denver Excellence Education Program (DEEP). Thomas has maintained a position on the Principal's Honor Roll for the last four years and has lettered in football, wrestling and track. Thomas has been accepted at the University of Northern Colorado and will be majoring in kinesiology.
  • Sanford Sundara, who currently holds a job and works at home helping his younger brothers and sisters. Sanford challenges himself at school by taking a variety of accelerated courses and still maintains a passing average. He has learned to channel his personal struggles into his poetry and has an inner drive to succeed.

Speakers who will attend seminars during the day Wednesday include Rev. Oscar Morgan, Denver Board of Education Member Bennie Milliner, Mr. John Smith, and Rev. Ralph Williams. The speakers will talk with students during one or more seminars on "Peace, Leadership and Unity."

Seminars run from 8:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., 10:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. An assembly will be held beginning at 9:00 a.m.
