550 Students In History
Day Competition Saturday, March 3
"Frontiers In History - People, Places,
Ideas" is the theme of this year's Denver History Day Competition,
which will generate academic excitement and colorful presentations Saturday,
March 3 at Hamilton Middle School.
Some 550 students have prepared 290 individual and group entries in the
competition, which encourages middle and high school students to learn about
an event in history, analyze it, and demonstrate its significance.
Hamilton Middle School is located at 8600 E. Dartmouth Ave. Nine schools
will compete in the junior division and five in the senior division this
Saturday. The competitions begin at 9:00 a.m. Awards will be presented at
3:30 p.m.
For the competition, students research a topic of their choice based on
the theme and prepare entries that may be in the form of historical papers,
documentaries (media presentation), live performances, or exhibits.
"This is one of the most thrilling days of the year, to see students
present their research in creative, compelling forms," said Becky Muggli,
student activities specialist for the Gifted and Talented Office. "You
can really see students connect with history through this competition."
Muggli noted that the competition meets state standards and strengthens
skills required under the Colorado Student Assessment Program.
The Denver competition is the first level in this nationwide event. Top
placing students advance to Colorado History Day at the University of Colorado
in Boulder on April 27. The state will then send competitors to National
History Day at the University of Maryland in June. Last year, Denver Public
Schools was home to a national winner and has earned many state trophies
in previous years.
