Newlon Is Turning 50! Celebration
Begins March 5
February 28, 2001
Fashion shows, HAM radio birthday wishes, and an evening sock hop will
be among the variety of events next week as Newlon Elementary School celebrates
its 50th anniversary.
The activities start Monday, March 5 with "Newlon Pride Day."
Staff and students will wear as much blue and gold as possible and the
Newlon Mascot will visit classrooms. In addition, each grade level is
completing a mural section about their decade.
On Tuesday, March 6, classrooms will develop different ways to make the
number "50" (mathematical equations, roman numerals, etc.).
On Wednesday, March 7, a hot air balloon will be inflated at 9:15 a.m.
on the west playground. Select students will be eligible for rides. In
addition, a HAM radio will be located in the library media center all
day as HAM radio operators will be attempting to contact the school's
station all day long. Each class will have a 20-minute opportunity to
visit with the HAM radio operators.
On Thursday, March 8, the "Education Rocks" musical program
will feature the "Fashions Of The Future" fashion show (at 10
a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.).
Also Thursday, each classroom will be providing one item for a new time
capsule to be placed in the school's new wing. The items will be brought
prior to the school's open house, which will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00
p.m.
And finally on Friday, March 9, students and staff will dress in 1950's
clothes all day and students will receive a birthday cupcake during lunch.
In the evening, a sock hop will be held in the gym from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30
