Budget Work Session Wednesday, February 14

The Denver Board of Education will continue budget discussions Wednesday, February 14.

The meeting is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. in the First Floor Board Room at 900 Grant Street.

Many reductions are included in the current proposal for balancing the $474 million 2001-2002 school year budget.

Those proposals include reducing from three to two sites for night school (a savings of $100,000) and from 11 to six sites where GED (general equivalency degree) programs are offered ($171,560).

Another $292,000 would be saved in the budget from military science education, $234,000 from Educational Resource Services, and $140,000 from the Office of the Superintendent.

The proposed budget also calls for savings in projected expenses for new computer magnets at North and Thomas Jefferson high schools ($523,000) and reductions in school spending above the RAM ($367,000) at magnets and other special programs due to planned sunsetting and other funding sources.

A balanced budget is required by state law and is due June 30. Discussions are being held early this year so schools can begin interviewing teacher applicants as soon as possible. The goal is to be as competitive as possible in recruiting and hiring the best teachers available.
