Superintendent Search Update
January 30, 2001
The Denver Board of Education announced today that time previously set aside
for possible interviews with superintendent applicants will not be used.
Board President Elaine Gantz Berman said applicants will be invited for
interviews after the Board determines the best hiring process that adheres
to the law. In consultation with its search firm, the Board agreed last
week not to extend any invitations to applicants for interviews, she said.
"Our goal is to find the best individual to lead Denver Public Schools,"
said Berman. "State law restricts our ability to extend confidentiality
to potential applicants who might be invited to the interview stage. We
are committed to running a search process that complies fully with state
law. We will move forward only when that process is clear to everyone concerned,
including all the potential applicants."
Berman said applicants have withdrawn their interest in the position, given
the state's legal definition of those considered to be finalists. Interview
times for potential applicants had been scheduled by the Board this week,
Berman said, but the Board opted not to invite any individuals for an interview
until all potential applicants are clear on the legal framework.
State law defines a finalist as "an applicant or candidate for an executive
position who is chosen for an interview or who is still being considered
for the position 21 days prior to making the appointment, whichever comes
first."
