Emily Griffith To Be Honored With Millennium Award

Mayor Wellington Webb, through his Office of Art, Culture, and Film, will honor Emily Griffith as one of the ten individuals or organizations that have made the most significant and lasting contribution to the citizens of Denver, since its founding.

Miss Griffith will be presented posthumously with the Mayor's Millennium Award at a public ceremony and reception on Wednesday, December 6, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Buell Theatre.

Sharon Robinson, Executive Director and Principal at Emily Griffith Opportunity School, will accept the award. Miss Griffith started Opportunity School in 1916 as an adult education facility. She envisioned a place that taught adults "to succeed at meaningful work and a purposeful place in the community." The school is still located on the spot where it was founded at 1250 Welton St., and it still opens its doors to "all who wish to learn" and improve their life.
