New Elementary Schools Need Name Suggestions

December 1, 2000

In August of 2001, two new elementary schools will open as the district continues to grow.

Both schools need names.

Your ideas are needed.

One school will open in Montbello, just north of Montbello High School, at 5130 Durham Ct. The other will open in northwest Denver at 3695 Wyandot St.

To suggest a name for either school, write to the Board of Education with your idea, along your rationale or information about the name's historical significance. Write to: DPS Board of Education, 900 Grant Street, Denver, CO 80203.

For the Montbello school, the deadline for submissions is December 12. For the northwest Denver school, the deadline for submissions is December 20.

Board policy states that no facility "generally" shall be named for a living person. Elementary schools "shall be given the names of areas or communities in the City and County of Denver." However, names can also be given for people famous for achievements in education, science, the humanities or other appropriate fields. In addition, Board policy suggests that names to be used "shall have stood the test of time as to their importance and worthiness of respect."
