Barnum To Host "Music-to-Reading" Singer

November 8, 2000

Students in Amy Dial's kindergarten class at Barnum Elementary School will have the opportunity to hear a well-known children's singer on Thursday, November 9. Jim Post, a popular artist in the Midwest, will sing songs to Dial's students as part of the "Music-to-Reading" program at Barnum.

Students have prepared by memorizing Post's songs in advance, which are geared toward providing a better understanding of the alphabet and reading techniques.

"We're very fortunate to have him come to Barnum," said Dial. "The students have memorized his songs, and they can't wait for him to get here."

Dial, using ideas from the Music-to-Reading program, has developed her own curriculum, dubbed "Breaking the Sounds Barrier," another method of teaching the fundamentals of reading through music. The program will culminate with the appearance by Post, which is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Thursday.

"The is a great way to help students learn to read," said Dial, "and a wonderful opportunity to hear a famous children's singer."

Barnum Elementary is located at 85 Hooker St. in Denver. For more information, contact Amy Dial at 303-935-3509.
