Cory Elementary "Wall Of Stars" For Veterans Day
November 7, 2000
Students at Cory Elementary School will celebrate this week's Veterans Day in a unique way.
Under the guidance of teacher Bernadette Gilday, students have been asked to research family history and uncover the names of any relatives or friends who are veterans. Students have been encouraged to contact family members to determine the names of those people who should be honored.
Once students have the names of veterans, they are writing them on paper stars, which will then be hung on the lunchroom wall.
This "Wall of Stars," a first year program at Cory, will create a visual thank you to all veterans. The Wall will be completed on Thursday, November 9.
Organizers believe this activity will assist students in better understanding what a veteran is and why Veterans Day is celebrated. The activity is open to students school-wide.
"The goal is to make (Veterans Day) meaningful to kids," said Cory Principal Patricia Trujillo, "by providing some sort of link to their family history. We think this activity will stress the importance of the holiday, instead of it being just a day off school."
Cory is located at 1550 South Steele St. in Denver. For more information, contact Laurie Eaton, Bernadette Gilday or Patricia Trujillo at 303-744-2726.
