Community Meetings For Superintendent Search Discussion

November 1, 2000

The Board of Education has scheduled four meetings to ask all segments of the school district and the general community to assist in the search for a new superintendent.

During the meetings, three questions will be posed:

First, what is working well in Denver Public Schools? Second, what areas need attention for the future? And what are the necessary characteristics that the Board of Education should look for in the next superintendent?

Meetings are scheduled November 14 at Gove and Kunsmiller middle schools and November 15 at Horace Mann and Merrill middle schools.

School principals are invited at 3 p.m.; teachers at 4 p.m., school district staff at 5 p.m., and any interested members of the community at 7 p.m.

The meetings will be run by Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, the firm selected by the Denver Board of Education to assist in the search for a new superintendent.

"The Board of Education is keenly interested in this phase of the search process - to understand from school district staff and the community what specific leadership abilities, characteristics, and educational philosophy a new superintendent should embody," said Board of Education President Elaine Gantz Berman. "We won't begin to consider how to shape the search until we are finished listening on this important question."

The four meeting sites are:

  • Gove Middle School, 4050 E. 14th Ave.
  • Kunsmiller Middle School, 2250 S. Quitman Way
  • Horace Mann Middle School, 4130 Navajo St.
  • Merrill Middle School, 1551 S. Monroe St.

Please call the Public Information Office, 720-423-3414, or the Denver Board of Education, 720-423-3210, for more information.
