October 25, 2000
The Chicago-based executive search firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) has been selected to assist Denver Public Schools in the search for a superintendent, Board of Education President Elaine Gantz Berman announced today.
"We had several excellent proposals from search firms," said Berman, "but this team brings a combination of a strong track record, extensive experience, and creative thinking that should prove to be quite valuable."
The Board finalized negotiations with HYA late Monday. The Board has scheduled a meeting with Bill Attea, who will serve as the Denver Public Schools contact on the search effort, on Wednesday, October 26, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be closed.
HYA will be paid $40,000, plus expenses.
"The Board is eagerly anticipating the assistance HYA can provide in helping us find and recruit the right superintendent for Denver Public Schools," said Berman.
HYA specializes in assisting school boards in the areas of executive recruitment and governance development. The firm has assisted over 300 school boards in thirty states with superintendent searches and has recruited and placed both traditional and non-traditional superintendent candidates.
Most recently, HYA helped school boards locate superintendents in Dallas, Texas, and Clark County, Nevada (Las Vegas) schools. HYA has also assisted superintendent searches in Austin, Des Moines, Fresno, Portland, and Knoxville, among many others.
The 60 associates of the firm include many who are affiliated with professional organizations and higher education who are aware of emerging leaders. HYA has developed a network of over 800 individuals and organizations that also assist in identifying good candidates.
HYA also works with school boards around the country in various consulting capacities.
Bernadette Seick, former Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education, is currently serving as superintendent for DPS.
