Charter School Application Deadline Is October 2August 18, 2000The Board of Education approved procedures and timelines for reviewing Charter school applications. For those seeking to establish a charter school for the 2001-2002 school year, the following timeline will apply: August 25: Charter school applicants may submit draft applications to district staff for initial review. October 2: Charter school applications are submitted for formal review. October 19: Charter school applicants will address the Board of Education. November 2: Board of Education hearing: Members of the community, district staff and the District School Improvement and Accountability Council (DSIAC) may address the Board regarding approval/denial of charter school applications. November 16: The Board will approve or deny charter school applications. Note: if there are four or more applications, the date will be moved ahead to December 1. A charter school is a type of public school that manages its own operations, such as budget and hiring. The charter school concept was approved by the state to give parents and community members the chance to try new approaches to education within the public school setting. With the start of the new school year Sept. 5, DPS will be home to seven charter schools.
