Keynote Speaker For CDM Gathering Is Robert G. Hoglund

August 17, 2000

Robert G. Hoglund, the president and co-founder of the Center for Quality Education, Inc., will be the keynote speaker of "The CDM Gathering," to be held Sept. 23 at the Colorado Convention Center.

Hoglund developed the seminar "Educating for Responsibility and Quality" that has helped thousands of teachers and students take more responsibility for their academic work and school behavior.

He has also authored articles on such topics as "Choosing to Fail," "The Conditions of Quality," and "It's Time for Genuine Reform: A Call for Quality." Hoglund was also the first person chosen by Dr. William Glasser to conduct training and consulting for the Quality School Consortium.

Hoglund is scheduled to speak from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The theme of the CDM Gathering is "how do communities work more effectively together in making decisions to improve student achievement?"

The gathering is geared for members of the district's Collaborative Decision-Making teams, but is open to all members of the community. To register, contact the Department of Community Relations, 720-423-3577.

"Teaming For Results" is the title of the gathering's general session, which will work to provide CDM members with "knowledge and strategies" to respond to the needs of the school and the community.

The general session will be followed by a series of workshops on the impact of recent state reforms (such as Senate Bill 186), how CDM teams effect student instruction, why some students achieve with ease (while others struggle), and how to help teachers find more time to teach.

Robert P. Ebers and Marc Horowitz of Impletec Education Services, a national consulting firm that seeks to build collaboration and teamwork in schools, will lead one session at the gathering.

"Through the gathering, we hope to provide to school decision-makers a picture of what quality leadership looks like - and how to focus the CDM on improved student learning," said Karen Fulgum Sear, CDM Community Specialist with the Department of Community Relations.

Aaron Gray, director of the Department of Community Relations, said his team is working to draw the community to the "table of learning" and will offer school-by-school support throughout the new school year to build the capacity for parents to feel comfortable and knowledgeable about school issues so they can function on CDM teams.

The CDM Gathering is scheduled to run from 8:30 (registration at 8:00 a.m.) through 12:30 p.m. The Colorado Convention Center is located in downtown Denver at 700 W. 14th Street.
