SPECIAL PUBLIC BUDGET HEARING IS JUNE 15

June 15, 2000

A special public hearing on the proposed budget will be held Thursday, June 15, at 7 p.m., in the first floor Board Room at 900 Grant St.

The proposed $447.8 million general fund budget for the 2000-2001 school year includes recommendations to increase spending for the Department of English Language Acquisition (ELA) and for high school counseling programs. School spending is untouched. Still to be decided, however, is cost-of-living raises to be offered to the Denver Classroom Teachers Association and other employee groups.

Those wishing to speak at the hearing should call 720-423-3211 by 5 p.m. on June 15.

The Board of Education has two other public meetings set for Thursday. The first meeting is a 4 p.m. work session in Room 706. The following items will be discussed:

  • Budget
  • Retirement Plan Changes
  • Health clinic at Knapp Elementary School
  • East West Partners
  • Education specifications - Middle School
  • Personnel Issues (closed)

The second meeting is the Board's regular legislative meeting at 6:15 p.m. in the first floor Board Room. Items to be considered include:

  • Recognition of the Denver Association of School Administrators as a professional association
  • The year-end report from the Citizens Committee on Bond Expenditures
  • Content Standards and Curriculum Matrices
  • Assessment plan
  • Designation of the new Green Valley Elementary School as a K-6 school, to relieve crowding in the far northeast area
  • Textbook selection and adoption procedures, and use of instructional materials
  • Construction contracts for the new schools in southwest and northwest Denver, and renovations to All-City Stadium
