FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND FIRE SCIENCE PROGRAM AVAILABLE AT CEC

May 24, 2000

The Career Education Center and the Denver Fire Department are offering a unique new program for students interested in pursuing a career in fire science.

Instruction is designed to enhance knowledge for students who may be potential candidates for the Firefighter 1 Program at Red Rocks Community College and the City and County of Denver's Public Safety Cadet Program. Instruction will include fire control, search and rescue, ventilation, and firefighter safety.

"The teaching position will be filled by a practicing fireman employed by the Denver Fire Department," said Tom Stevens, Executive Director of the Career Education Center. "Our focus is to interest traditionally under-represented individuals in a career in Fire Science with the Denver Fire Department."

Students who finish the course will be able to apply for full scholarship positions.

The CEC program is the only one in Colorado geared to high school students. Juniors and seniors will receive high school and college credit after successful completion of the firefighter course. The program will be offered beginning with the 2000-2001 school year.

For additional information, please contact the CEC at 303-964-3000. The Career Education Center is located at 2650 Eliot Street.
