PARK HILL GIVES TO GATHERING PLACE

May 23, 2000

Park Hill Elementary School students will donate more than $100 to The Gathering Place, Denver's only day-shelter for women and children during two school assemblies Wednesday, May 24.

The money was collected from classmates through a school-wide 'thankful bank,' in which students put their own spare change into a class bank, and told classmates about things for which they are grateful. The money will be given to The Gathering Place in the form of an over-sized, hand-painted check during the assemblies. Students who have been involved in the project went on tours to The Gathering Place; they will present their experiences to the school and will read a poem written for the event.

"It was the kids' idea," said teacher Laura Felix. "The thankful bank began as a holiday project in my own classroom, and the kids in the Park Hill United Nations [a student leadership group] took the initiative to encourage their classmates and other teachers to continue it. The Gathering Place is in our community, and they help children like ours, so it was an easy decision to give the money to them."
