GOVE STUDENT NATIONAL WINNER IN VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM

May 16, 2000

Phillip Dorsey, an eighth-grade student from Gove Middle School, is a national winner in the "Do the Write Thing" violence prevention program.

Phillip and a parent have won an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in July. Phillip's writing will also be published, along with other winners, in a national book outlining teen's efforts to stop violence in their communities. The program is sponsored by the National Campaign to Stop Violence and, locally, by the law offices of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.

Students were offered specific suggestions about what they and others could do to reduce youth violence and drug abuse in their neighborhoods. Students were asked to write about personal experiences relating to the impact of youth violence and drug abuse on their lives and the lives of their peers.
