I went to Johnson Elementary (Florida and Irving?) from 1954-'58, and then transferred to the new Schenck Elementary (Lowell and Louisiana?) for grades 4, 5 and 6 from '58 to '61. I recall a fine Physical Education teacher and gentleman from Schenck by the name of Mr. John Vechiarelli, who in his teaching/coaching/friendships with his students showed a rare caring and passion for their success. He made it clear when he thought you were avoiding living up to your potential, yet was quick with praise when you achieved beyond expectation.
Also at Schenck was a home room teacher named Mr. Goody, who became even more an integral part of the class when PBS first started broadcasting Spanish lessons on live TV in the classroom (remember channel 6's Mr. Manzanares?). Mr. Goody was learning Spanish right alongside us, and he did a fine job.
I went on to Kunsmiller Jr. High before my family moved to Durango in March of 1963. I have wonderful multiple memories of my Southwest Denver days as a youngster in the DPS system.
