Memories of Denver Public School

My 8th and 9th Grade years were made every so wonderful by a very special teacher, Mr. Allerton H. Barnes. Mr. Barnes was my home room teacher and taught History and Social Studies. The school years 1953-54 and 1954-55 are still vividly memorable in my mind because of the hours spent with Mr. Barnes. He was a teacher and and actor. When he presented a history lesson he became the subject of his discussion. He read many lessons with theatrical flair and grandeur. With this presentation he created for me a lasting love of all things historical, whether Colorado or world, plus a love of performing that has stayed with me all these years.

Allerton Hewitt Barnes was a teacher's teacher and a students dream. One could only wish that his enthusiasm existed in more teachers today.
