I have fond and lasting memories of two schools and two very important people. It was 1967 and I was in second grade at Wyatt Elementary School. My teacher was Mrs. Easterling. I recall her opening the world up to me with knowledge and caring. I happened to be the lucky recipient of some of her daughters hand-me-down dresses, which I thought were the most exquisite confections on earth. She taught in such a tangible and loving way. Later in life, I met a mentor who was equally loving and skilled. As an employee of Pioneer Charter School, I had the privilege of working under Dr. Mary Sours. She was (and still is) a compassionate and competent administrator who guided the birth of a new school that aspired to serve the whole child. The staff felt like family and the learning felt like love.
