There are so many memories that I have from when I was a student in DPS. Memories of all the great friends that I made along the way, of favorite teachers, of all the fun activities, fundraisers, clubs, and sports that I took part in. Homecomings, Proms, Cheerleading, sweethearts, and Graduation, but the most important and truly special memories are of my teacher from 5th and 6th grade at Jose Valdez Elementary, 1985-1987.
She challenged me to be a great student and not average, to understand the ups and downs of friendships, the heartaches of crushes, and why things were just the way they were or why they couldn’t be. She listened and she cared, but most importantly was a friend when I truly needed one!
Thank you Miss Gail Newhall.
Although, Ms. Newhall wins my award for “Most Influential and Greatest Teacher EVER,” I also want to acknowledge some pretty terrific runner-ups:
Jose Valdez Elementary 1982-1987
Ms. Hoover
Skinner Middle School 1987-1989
Ms. Chalmers
West High School 1989-1993
Mr. Allen
Ms. Climp
Ms. Sarmiento-Barnes
And yes, even Mr. Zaragoza!
I appreciate all the teachers that I had, they all made my years in DPS memorable!
Now, I have the pleasure of working with some pretty great people that make DPS what it is. Maybe when I retire, which feels like centuries from now, I will write about my memories of when I was a DPS employee and present my award for “Greatest Co-Worker or Boss EVER;” I think Mr. Jose Perea (ELA) is ahead in the running!
